PenMount Advanced Calibration Upgrade for Handheld Products

In the touch screen field, resistive touch screen is most commonly used in the market today.  According to market research, resistive touch screen market share stands at 86% and can be applied to various types of applications, such as MID, UMPC, PDA, Smart Phone, GPS, etc, which commonly use the 4 wire resistive touch screen. However, more and more companies are considering the 5-wire touch screen for these types of applications.

The design of 4-wire and 5-wire touch screen is different, and the bezel mechanical design to go with these touch screens could be different as well. Because of its innate constitution, there are some hard to overcome limitations in the resistive touch screens. For 4-wire touch screen, there is a forbidden area which is from the active area to the sliver trace area, user is not allowed to draw along this area with a stylus as this could cause damage to the touch screen. But for a 5-wire touch screen there is no such forbidden area; however, an avoidable fact is that the perimeter of the active area which is about 7% of the border region of the active area, the linearity of this perimeter area has a ratio of about +/- 3% inaccuracy.

In the above-mentioned limitations of the resistive touch screen, PenMount has a solution.  The PenMount team came out with a new improved calibration software utility by moving the calibration points inward. . In the current version of the Advanced Calibration utility, the calibration points are along the border of display area, which is also the border region of the touch screen. Therefore, in the new Advanced Calibration utility, we moved each of the calibration points 2% inward; and for the outer region, we incorporated specially developed mathematical algorithm designs to enhance the linearity accuracy of the whole active area of the touch screen. For example, a 7” LCD panel with resolution 1024x600, after advanced calibration the distance between cursor and touch point is less than 1mm. Besides, PenMount new Advanced Calibration program is still capable of correcting non-linearity problem. For example, a 15” touch screen, after using PenMount Advanced 25-point Calibration process, a 5cm drift can be corrected to less than 5mm.

PenMount new Advanced Calibration utility program is ready and for Windows 2000/XP/Vista and available for download from our website. The version for Linux Kernel 2.6 and WinCE will be ready in the very near future.
