PenMount 6000 USB Controller Supports Win 7 Gestures

Microsoft Windows 7 operating system provides several kinds of touch input gestures to improve user experience. Some of our customers are asking how to use PenMount touch controllers with the gesture support in Windows 7. Undoubtedly, as one of the best touch input solutions, the current PenMount controllers are definitely compatible with the “single finger” gestures support that Microsoft Windows 7 provides.

The gesture support is not a totally new feature in Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. In fact, Microsoft started gesture recognition in Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Gesture occurs when operating mouse or touch screen devices with predefined patterns in certain areas and at a certain period of time. By this specific tracking line, we then make the definition of a feature in system or application software, it is called ‘gesture’ operation.  For example, Microsoft Windows 7 and Vista operating system includes a "Flicks" function, which has defined several gestures in the pen input device; it provides more convenience and is more user friendly in the applications; user can scroll up and down for ‘page up and down’ function. Besides the 4 to 8 types of Flicks options in Windows Vista, it is also available for user to pick up more predefined function code from the hotkey menu.

In Microsoft Windows 7 and Vista, the system provides additional gesture called “flicks”. These flicks are effective everywhere on the Windows desktop. When system detects “flicks”, it will send a predefined, configurable hot key, which can be used for browsing web pages or editing documents. The other major tablet PC feature in Windows 7 is the handwriting recognition system. The handwriting recognizer allows users to write on touch screens, and then convert them into text input for application such as text editors or Internet browsers. In Windows 7, it also allows users to customize their own handwriting styles, and provide better character recognition results. In addition, when using handwriting recognition with Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7, it can automatically add the "http://" prefix for user’s convenience. Furthermore, there is a new math input panel in Windows 7, which allows users to write down math formulas and conveniently use them in their own documents. If you want to use “flicks” and relative API with PenMount touch controller, you will need to install the PenMount pen input device driver instead of the standard PenMount Universal Driver.

The Micosoft Windows 7 can also detect a small set of dual finger gestures such as zoom, pan and rotate. Many of our customers are interested in these dual finger gestures, since they look more fundamental than the original single finger gestures such as “flicks”; these gestures require special touch screen kits that can detect multi finger touches. The PenMount team is working on the multi-touch solutions as well as the single finger gesture solutions, which need no special hardware besides the traditional resistive touch screens. In the next issue of PenMount bulletin, we will discuss more about the topic of PenMount Gesture Features.
